About Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori was born in Chiaravalle, Italy in 1870 and grew up to become the first female physician in Italy in 1986. She worked in the fields of psychiatry, education, and anthropology. In 1906 she gave up her medical practice to work with a group of sixty young children. Montessori was able to show to the world that children, ages 4 ½ -5 ½-years, can learn to read and write spontaneously. She believed that if children were not force fed information they learn more naturally and happily. Her method was based on what she observed children to do “naturally” by themselves without being assisted by adults, but rather guided by them. She died in 1952, but her legacy lives on with over 150 schools in the US and even more worldwide.
